Effect of cattle feces and wormcompost supplementation on odor compounds in pig slurry
Abstract:
In this trial, effect of cattle feces and vermicompost on odor compounds in pig slurry were investigated. Two level of cattle feces and vermicompost were supplemented in anaerobically fermented pig slurry, and the effect of cattle feces and vermicompost on odor compounds in pig slurry were determined. It turned out that cattle feces had decreased the concentration of acetic acid and butyric acid by 7 fold and 2 fold respectively (P<0.01), except for propionic acid; The concentration of valeric acid and I valeric acid were increased in the slurry with cattle feces in mid stage of experiment, and deceased whereafter. In addition, cattle feces had significantly increased the biogas production by 3 fold (P<0.01), decreased the concentration of 3 methylindole in pig slurry. The concentration of p cresol and 3 methylindole in the slurry containing vermicompost was lower, compared with control; Vermicompost had also decreased the concentration of most VFAs in pig slurry. The concentration of total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen were decreased significantly when the slurry supplemented with cattle feces and earthworm; Slurry pH and ammonia emission increased significantly in the slurry by cattle feces and earthworm supplementation. It was concluded that cattle feces and vermicompost can reduce some of odorant concentrations in anaerobically fermented pig slurry.
